Internet Memes Remembered at ROFL Con

Some people try and ignore them in the hopes that they will just go away. Others embrace them and continue to share them long after people wish they would. For those who really, really love them there is the ROFL Con. The Boston Herald wrote about the convention which is being held by MIT.
The best - and, well, the worst - of Internet culture will crawl out of computer screens across the globe and descend on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Friday and Saturday for the first-ever ROFLCon, a joint venture of the Harvard and MIT Free Culture programs that will feature more than 60 Internet celebrities, guest speakers and college professors.

"We're getting the Internet to appear in the real world," said ROFLCon organizer and Harvard senior Tim Hwang.

If you don't know that ROFL stands for "Rolling on the Floor Laughing," then chances are you've never marveled at the luminescent costume detail of Tron Guy, giggled to grammatically depraved kitty captions on the Web site "I Can Has Cheezeburger" or hopped aboard the meteoric rise of the "Stuff White People Like" blog. That site garnered 24 million hits over a few months and landed creator Christian Lander a book deal with Random House Publishing.
Very important things happened at this convention - such as a panel on lolcats. Even Tron Man attended as you can see in the photograph on the right. You can see more photographs from the convention here.

Pretend That You Love Another Stakeout

Another StakeoutDo you remember the movie Another Stakeout? If you said no you aren't alone. Funny or Die wants you to know it and love it. Or at least pretend that you do. They are trying to turn the movie into a cult hit.
Come join us and help us turn this movie into a giant cult hit for absolutely no good reason. Register and vote 10/10 for the movie. Get into heated trivia arguments about the movie. Quote lines, question other Stakeout heads' commitment to the movie. Let's forward this e-mail and flood the site to the point where there are Another Stakeout festivals and conventions and midnight showings with people in costume saying lines along with the movie ala Rocky Horror Pic Show. And remember, we are Another Stakeout fans. Not Stakeout fans. The first one was pretty good but like the Godfather 2 (or is the Godfather 2 like Another Stakeout?) director John Badham got it right the second time around. AS 2 forever!!
It's a funny idea but it might not work because AS 2 is not memorable. To be a cult film a movie has to be memorable otherwise it is too much work to try and turn it into a cult hit.

CNN Launching Comedy News Show

Not Just Another Cable New ShowThe Associated Press is reporting that CNN's Headline News channel is launching a comedy show called Not Just Another Cable News Show.
CNN Headline News isn't the first place you'd look for comedy, but the network says it will try to have fun with some of the clips in its news archives.

Not Just Another Cable News Show will premiere April 5, the network said Monday.

"It's an entertaining way to recall some of the more memorable moments captured on video," said Ken Jautz, executive vice president at CNN Worldwide.

The 30-minute show will be on Saturdays at 7 p.m. ET, then repeated twice later in the evening. It will be followed each time by News to Me, a series that shows hot Web videos.
The Comedy Central Insider notes that Fox News also has a comedy show called 1/2 Hour News Hour. Both of these channels are supposed to be about news so something seems very wrong about news networks attempting Daily Show type of funnies.
